Book One: Chapter Three

Image
A young man in a dark gray tunic with greasy black hair and a large nose led a white horse down a dirt path. He looked down the trail with small dark eyes, past the wheat field to the large manor house. He finally reached the outside of the home in front of two large doors. He went to the left side where there was a smaller door inset into the larger one. He knocked on the outside of the thick wood several times with a spiral bronze door knocker. The door opened and a short plain looking man in a long tunic with dark brown hair peered from the door with dark eyes. "Hello, who art thou and what business dost thou have at Meikell Manor?" he said. "I am Deikuneist, son of Etae the Tailor. I come from Kirsgar with a mended dress for the daughter of the Viscount." "I will announce thee. Wait here." The gangly young man nodded, while the other went back through the door and closed it. After a minute the door opened again. "Come inside." He...

Book One: Chapter Two

Chained Innocence  A man stood nervously on a wooden platform with his arms behind his back. He had short hair and a large nose. There were heavy bags beneath his eyes, presumably from lack of sleep. A rope noose was placed about his neck by a tall individual in a black skullcap. The sound of a crowd could be heard around him. Then a burlap sack was placed over his head. The crowd was murmuring louder now and jeering. The man with the black hat went to a lever and pulled it. A trap door opened beneath the man with the sack over his head. He fell and the noose caught his neck with a jerk. Those in the crowd cheered.  The twins and their mother sat in a small carriage looking over the crowd towards the spectacle on the wooden execution stage.  Allora wasn’t looking towards the hanged man, she had decided to look down at the crowd.  If she had looked completely away, her mother would have been upset.  She had made that mistake too many times to repeat i...

Allora's Flight or Fly Away Home A melody of sweet flute music rose from the small window of a stone manor house west of a small village and wheat fields. Through the open window was a bedroom with large rugs covering the stone floor. A short woman with an aging face and a tight bun covered in a laced shawl looked lazily towards twin girls playing on recorder-style flutes.  The identical twins had sky blue eyes and long raven-black hair which was covered on top with a linen skull cap.  The twins looked young, in their mid to late teens, and each wore a full length dress covering nearly their entire body from chin to ankle and shoulder to wrist. One of the girls wore a gauzy light blue material over a dark blue dress beneath. The gauzy material was open at the sleaves beneath each shoulder, but the dark blue dress beneath covered her arms to her wrists and her legs down to her ankles. At the hem of the dress was a circular spiral design that was repeated about every...
